The Secretary of State for Health is seeking to appoint a chair and two non executive directors to the Health Research Authority (HRA). The HRA has been set up to protect and promote the interests of patients and the public in health research. It will lead on the creation of a unified approval process, promote consistent and proportionate standards for compliance and inspection and continue to run the National Research Ethics Service; all these roles contribute to improving patient and public health in the UK.
Chair

The chair of the HRA is a key public appointment. It requires an exceptional individual with a reputation of the highest order who has the capacity, drive and enthusiasm to lead the development of a new organisation dealing with complex and sensitive issues.
Remuneration for the chair will be between £37,780 and £47,287 per annum for a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per week.
Non executive directors

Non executive directors (NEDs) will have an important role in supporting the chair by contributing to the effective governance of the organisation. They will support and steer the board and represent it externally. They will provide leadership in one or more specific areas: service user involvement; finance and audit; organisational governance; and/or reducing system complexity. One NED will chair the HRA’s audit committee.
Remuneration will be £13,136 per annum for the NED who chairs the audit committee, with £7,882 per annum payable to the other NED. Time commitment for both roles will be 2 to 3 days per month.
The Secretary of State for Health determines the length of appointments, which will be for up to a maximum of four years.
